KOMA – I had the pleasure of being invited to dinner at KOMA by a dear friend. You know, food always tastes better with company. Even an order of French fries in Mc Donald’s. My memory goes back to Uni (not the food, the school.) when I shared a Large Fries with a school mate. I must have been on budget or sharing
calories, but those fries would have tasted ordinary if I had them on my own.
I’ve always wanted to dine at KOMA. Mostly cos I was fascinated with the Kyoto Torii Gates and always pictured myself in a full purple suit walking through.
Fast forward months after opening, albeit not in Japan, the whole lot of went to check out the menu at KOMA, a new concept by TAO Group. The only thing purple about my outfit was my shoes, and no photos were taken cos, truth be told, the spotlight made me look horrible.
The décor was so very nice. I think it was the only place in Singapore (that I can think of for the past couple days) that actually transports you out. Those Torii Gates definitely did its part to transport you from ordinary space to sacred space. Even my friends said the interior, and dining experience, was akin to dinner in a Japanese restaurant in London. It was refreshing to be honest.
Although we were pretty much confused by some elements of the décor – confusion between Japanese and Chinese elements, overall the concept was cool. The convertible round tables with bras studs that turns to a square table, the giant multi-face bell, the orange bridge, the lanterns and the tiniest details like our chopstick holder which was a hardened origami crane.
The food was awesome. Lol, this is funny but I actually asked a friend if she thought the cooks/chefs were Asian or Caucasian. She laughed and said, I liked the fact that you didn’t even consider if they were just Japanese.
The food was good! We ordered almost everything on the menu. I actually ordered the Uni Carbonara but I was too full from all the side dishes to eat any heavy meals. The sirloin was good, the unagi was good, salmon pillows and I had my good dose of Uni. In general, the food was good, the music was AWESOME.
I’d recommend KOMA for a celebratory dinner or just before a night out because it really does set the mood for a party! I will definitely be back again!
